Goupil & C° imprimeurs éditeurs Boussod, Valadon & C ie successeurs 19, Boulevard Montmartre, Paris Adr · Télégr · Boussoval · Paris. le 8 Janv _ 1890 Mon cher Vincent, Quand je t’écrivais la dernière fois c’était sous l’impression de la première lettre du D r Peyron _ Je suis bien bien content que ce n’est pas si mal que cette lettre le faisait supposer et lui-même m’a écrit de nouveau pour dire que c’était tout autrement tourné qu’il ne l’avait cru d’abord. Dans sa première lettre il faisait entendre qu’il était dangereux que tu continuas à peindre / les couleurs étant un poison, mais il s’est un peu emballé / s’étant peut être simplement rapporté à des avoir entendu dire / lui même étant malade. Espérons donc que tu puisses continuer à travailler comme tu l’entends. Tasset doit t’avoir expédié un nouvel envoi de couleurs & de toile. Hier soir est arrivé ton nouvel envoi, qui est bien remarquable _ Sais tu / une des choses que j’aime le mieux c’est le soir d’après Millet. Copié comme cela ce n’est plus une copie. Il y a un ton là-dedans et tout est si bien dans l’air. C’est vraiment bien réussi. Parmi les autres toiles j’aime beaucoup les femmes qui grimpent sur des rochers & la grand’route avec les cantonniers. Je trouve que dans tes derniers travaux il y a plus d’atmosphère / plus de distance que dans les précédents _ Ce qui provient peut être que tu n’empâtes pas tant partout _ – Il y avait dans un des rouleaux aussi un superbe dessin à la plume qui représente une fontaine dans un jardin; Dimanche prochain j’ai rendez vous avec Lauzet – qui les trouvera bien beau, j’en suis sûr. Je suis de ton avis qu’il serait peut être bon que tu viennes un peu içi ce printemps, quitte à aller après à la campagne si la vie içi ne te convient pas. Içi il y aura toujours la question que tu ne puisses pas travailler dehors, mais tu verras & en tous les cas nous serons contents de t’avoir avec nous pour quelque temps. L’accouchement de Jo doit avoir lieu entre le 1 er & le 15 Fevrier et après cela sa mère reste environ un mois mais après son départ, la petite chambre est libre & à ta disposition. Jo va très bien et ne sent pas beaucoup de malaise par sa grossesse. Le médecin aussi croit que cela ira bien. Wil est arrivé tellement enrhumé qu’elle était obligé de rester au lit ce matin, mais j’espère qu’elle en sera quitte avec un jour ou deux de ménagement. C’est gentil de M r Salles d’être allé te voir. Je lui avais écrit au jour de l’an mais je n’avais pas osé lui demander d’aller te voir. I’m very, very glad that it isn’t as bad as that letter made me assume, and he himself wrote to me again to say that it had taken a quite different turn than he had thought at first. In his first letter he gave me to understand that it was dangerous for you to continue to paint, as the paints were a poison, but he got a little carried away, perhaps through simply relying on hearsay, being ill himself. Let’s hope, then, that you may continue to work as you intend to. Tasset must have dispatched a new consignment of colours and canvas to you. Yesterday evening your new consignment arrived, and it’s very remarkable. You know, one of the things I like best is the Evening after Millet . Copied like that it’s no longer a copy. There’s a tone in it and everything is so harmonious. It’s really very successful. Among the other canvases I very much like the women climbing on the rocks and the main road with the road-menders. I feel that there’s more atmosphere in your latest works, more distance than in the preceding ones. Which comes perhaps from the fact that you don’t use so much impasto everywhere. In one of the rolls there was also a superb pen drawing of a fountain in a garden; next Sunday I have a meeting with Lauzet – who will find them very fine, I’m sure. I share your opinion that it would perhaps be good that you should come here for a while this spring, even if you go to the country afterwards if the life here doesn’t suit you. Here there’ll always be the matter of you being unable to work outdoors, but you will see, and in any case we’ll be happy to have you with us for a while. Jo ’s confinement should take place between 1 and 15 February, and after that her mother is staying for around a month, but after she’s left the little room is free and at your disposal. Jo is very well and doesn’t feel much discomfort from her pregnancy. The doctor also thinks that it will go well. Wil arrived with such a bad cold that she had to stay in bed this morning, but I hope that she’ll be rid of it with a day or two’s care. It’s kind of Mr Salles to go and see you. I wrote to him on New Year’s Day but I hadn’t dared ask him to go and see you. I’m very pleased that this time the crisis passed so quickly.
